WineDirect Offsets 100% of Carbon Emissions from Shipping

By  Joe Waechter
September 13, 2022

Take a moment to ask yourself — how many online purchases have you made this month? Last holiday season? In 2022, overall? Your business - and ours - thrive on increased opportunity to sell wine directly to consumers online. We work tirelessly to meet your customers’ expectations for a fast, seamless experience from purchase to delivery. At the same time, we are conscious of the environmental impact of shipping wine across the country, and strive to mitigate it where we can.

That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that WineDirect is continuing to offset 100% of the carbon emissions of our clients’ packages shipped through all 6 of our U.S. fulfillment centers. This investment has the environmental impact equivalent to growing 185,650 tree seedlings for 10 years or taking 2365 cars off the road for an entire year.

If you're a WineDirect Fulfillment customer, you can use these print and digital design assets in your marketing campaigns and share the news that your winery is reducing its carbon footprint!

We’re not only proud to reduce our own company’s footprint, but also to involve our fulfillment clients in the effort. By choosing WineDirect as your fulfillment partner, you can now assure your members and DTC buyers that the environmental impacts of all shipments they receive from you are fully offset with investments in high quality, verified carbon offsets. Carbon Offset Certificate 2022

WineDirect is the only fulfillment and logistics company in our industry contributing to this kind of environmental stewardship effort. In doing so, we join sustainability-minded leaders such as Etsy and Lyft — companies that are also investing in emissions reduction projects.

According to the EPA, transportation is the #1 contributor of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., accounting for almost 30%. By partnering with industry leader 3Degrees, we’re offsetting 100% of emissions related to our clients’ shipments by sponsoring renewable energy generation at a dairy farm that prides itself on innovation. This decision aligns with our business goals of sustainability and technology leadership, and the goals of our winery clients who have expressed interest in ways to improve our footprint together.

U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Offsetting the lion’s share of our operation’s carbon emissions is just one of numerous ways we are practicing ecological stewardship. Our fulfillment center in Napa Valley includes 3/4 of an acre of wetlands, uses recycled water and employs a night air exchange, reducing our energy consumption.

Investing in our environment isn’t just good for the planet, it’s good for business. It’s no secret that consumers are increasingly committed to supporting businesses whose values align with theirs. According to Forbes, 7 in 10 millennials actively consider a company’s values when making a purchase decision. And this trend is on the rise for older generations, too. In merely two years, adults across Generation X, Baby Boomers and the Golden Generation all shifted their shopping habits in the direction of values-driven purchasing.

By taking action to support our community and our environment, we are aligning ourselves with the goals and values of our winery clients and the rapidly growing segment of U.S. consumers whose purchase decisions are driven by these values.

At WineDirect, we are committed to being both a strong DTC partner to wineries and a strong corporate citizen. We are excited to take this impactful step that achieves both goals and look forward to finding even more ways we can invest in both our environment and our community.
