Giving Back

I’m always touched at this time of year to see just what a benevolent group of people the wine industry is comprised of. We routinely call on them to host, sponsor, or contribute to philanthropic events and the extent of participation is nothing short of amazing. From small fundraising events held by local schools, to events the magnitude of Auction Napa Valley, our local wineries are always giving back.

Today’s news featured a press release by Treasury Wine Estates announcing the upcoming launch of Colby Red. This new wine brand, which will be rolled out over the first two months of 2011, is produced by Groom Wines in partnership with Treasury Wine Estates and is dedicated to raising funds for cardiac research.

The examples of philanthropy in the wine industry are numerous. Here are just a few examples of charitable programs, some for the holidays and most year round:

Upcoming Events and Special Holiday Programs

Mutineer Magazine: Mutineer Magazine has been working with “A Child’s Right”, a group dedicated to bringing safe drinking water to children in impoverished urban areas. In support of global water relief, they’re hosting two events this holiday season:

Gallo Family Vineyards: Through the “Every Cork Counts” program, Gallo Family Vineyards is working with Meals on Wheels and will donate $5 for every Gallo Family Vineyards Cork mailed in between November 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010 (maximum $25,000).

BR Cohn: BR Cohn, who each year hosts a Fall Music Festival, Auction, and Celebrity Golf Classic to benefit local charities, is holding a Holiday Open House and Food Drive on December 6th.

Year Round Philanthropy

Wine to Water: Wine to Water is an organization dedicated to providing clean water throughout the world. Holding tasting events is just one of the many ways they raise funds for this important cause.

One Hope Wine: Donating an astonishing 50% of profits to various charitable organizations, One Hope Wine has raised over $350,000 to date.

Fledgling Wine: A partnership between Twitter and Crushpad, The Fledgling Initiative donates $5 for every $25 bottle sold to “Room to Read”, a non-profit organization promoting literacy in third-world countries.

Humanitas: In business since 2002, Humanitas, whose tagline is “Drink Charitably”, benefits your local community by donating profits to the regional chapters of charities offering solutions to the issues of hunger, affordable housing, and education.

Lookout Ridge: The Lookout Ridge “Wines for Wheelchairs” program will donate one wheelchair for every bottle of current release wine purchased or one wheelchair for every case of library wine purchased.

Cleavage Creak: The owners of Cleavage Creak are dedicated to fighting breast cancer, and donate 10% of gross wine sales to support breast cancer research.

Darms Lane: At Darms Lane, one third of the $75 purchase price of the 2007 Linda’s Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon benefits the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.

Staglin Family Vineyards: Since joining the wine industry in 1985, the Staglins have donated or raised more than $725 million to support various charities.

Corkage Fees for Charity

Wine Enthusiast Magazine recently featured an article about corkage to charity programs that are popping up across the country. Two examples from the article are:

Pearl: A casual bistro in downtown Napa, Pearl donates ½ of each corkage fee to Napa Humane.

Farmstead Restaurant: A casual restaurant in St. Helena featuring an authentic farm-to-table menu sourced from Long Meadow Ranch and other local purveyors, Farmstead donates all proceeds from its $2 “Corkage for Community” program to a different community based organization each month.

Salud!
