5 eCommerce Features You Can Take Advantage of Now: Feature 3

Today’s post, the third in the series, is about mobile websites. As always, you can contact your Account Manager or our Sales Team for more information on any of these features.

Feature Number Three: A Mobile Website

I was out with family on a beautiful weekend not too long ago and we decided to visit a winery we hadn’t been to before. To get directions, I grabbed my iPhone and searched. I think you’ve probably guessed where I’m going with this……

This is the message that I got:

“This site makes use of Flash 8. To experience it the way we intended, you need Macromedia Flash Player 8, a plug-in for your Web Browser that can play the content we've created. To download and install it, click here.”

While this may be somewhat of an extreme example, I am surprised that we haven’t seen greater adoption of mobile technology in the wine industry. After all, when you’re trying to access a winery website from your phone, it’s not easy to deal with drop down navigation and numerous pages of teeny tiny text, when what you’re really after may be as simple as a phone number.

With about 4.7 million annual visitors to the Napa Valley alone, I think that having a mobile website should be high on the priority list for anyone with a tasting room.

In February, comScore released “The comScore 2010 Mobile Year in Review.” They called 2010 a “game changing year for mobile.”

Some of their key findings for the US (as of December 2010):

  • 109 million US mobile subscribers (47 percent of the total audience) accessed mobile media in December 2010
  • The fastest growing categories were (in order):
    • Social Networking at 57.9 million mobile users (up 56 percent versus a year ago)
    • Classifieds at 17 million mobile users (up 55 percent versus a year ago)
    • Online Retail at around 16 million mobile users (up 53 percent versus a year ago)
  • Smartphone* subscribers: 63.2 million
    • And nearly 1/3 of users have unlimited data plans (a key driver in mobile media consumption

*comScore defines smartphones as a mobile device with the following operating systems: RIM, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Palm, or Symbia

Our mobile sites are full featured websites optimized for iPhone or Android phones. They include eCommerce and wine club, a member’s area, content and blogs, all designed for the mobile experience. The member’s area and eCommerce functionality are fully secure and PCI compliant.

Now, visitors can easily find you, restaurant goers who are thinking about ordering your wine can pull up information to help them make their decision, club members can see if they have a shipment ready for pickup….. The list goes on.

I think a mobile website is a must have at this stage in the game.
